CUPW Accuses Ottawa of Rigging Canada Post Union Vote

CUPW Slams Ottawa for “Saving Canada Post Management”

The Canada Post union negotiations have escalated into a high-stakes standoff, with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) accusing the federal government of siding with management rather than promoting fair bargaining.

🔍 What’s Happening Now?

After 18 months of tense negotiations, Canada Post submitted a “final offer” to its 55,000 unionized employees. The proposed package includes:

  • 💰 A 13.59% wage increase spread over four years
  • 🎁 Up to $1,000 in signing bonuses
  • 🛠️ Operational changes including dynamic routing and weekend part-time shifts

📣 Union Response: “A Bailout for Management”

On June 23, CUPW issued a fiery statement rejecting the deal, calling the federally initiated CIRB-led vote “an attempt to bypass real bargaining.” The union alleges Ottawa is once again “bailing out Canada Post management”, claiming that forcing a national vote under Section 108.1 of the Canada Labour Code undermines their collective power.

“This isn’t democracy—it’s intervention,” said CUPW spokesperson Jan Simpson. “The government’s role should be to facilitate negotiations, not dictate outcomes.”

🗳️ The CIRB Vote: What’s at Stake?

In early June, the Canada Industrial Relations Board approved a vote among union members to either accept or reject the final offer. While CUPW remains defiant, the vote may still move forward, placing workers in a position to decide independently.

Simpson added, “We are being told to either accept a subpar deal or risk further delays, all while the government pretends to be neutral.”

📦 Impact on Canadian Businesses & Consumers

The ongoing Canada Post union negotiations have broad implications:
