Missed a UPS Delivery? 3 Easy Steps to Retrieve Your Package!

If you missed a UPS delivery, don’t panic—it happens more often than you think! Whether it’s because no one was home or the delivery driver couldn’t access your location, there are still several ways to get your package back quickly and easily. Here’s what you need to know:

1️⃣ Wait for UPS to Reattempt Delivery or Pick It Up at a Nearby Location

If your first delivery attempt fails, UPS usually makes up to three attempts on subsequent business days. Check the delivery notice (often a yellow InfoNotice) left at your door, which will tell you the next delivery attempt time or where to pick up the package. This might be your nearest UPS Access Point™ or UPS Store®. Follow the instructions on the notice and pick up your package accordingly.

2️⃣ Understand UPS’s Three Delivery Attempts & Return to Sender Policy

Unlike USPS, UPS allows up to three delivery attempts before marking a package as “Return to Sender,” giving you two extra chances to receive your package. UPS also offers real-time tracking updates on its website, so you can monitor the status and estimated delivery time.

In some cases, if direct delivery isn’t possible, UPS may leave your package at a nearby Access Point for a limited time for you to pick up. This is similar to FedEx’s strategy in similar cases.

Overall, even if you miss the first delivery, UPS’s multiple attempts and convenient pickup options ensure that you can safely receive your package. Keep an eye on those notices and tracking updates to act promptly.

3️⃣ When UPS Says “Delivered Front Door” But You Don’t See Your Package

If your tracking status says “Delivered Front Door” but there’s no package, it could mean it was delivered to the wrong address or stolen. First, check with your neighbors and property management to see if someone accepted it for you. If you still can’t find it, contact UPS customer service to report the issue and start a claim. Sometimes, UPS hands packages off to USPS for final delivery—especially with services like UPS SurePost™—so consider checking with USPS too.

How to File a Lost Package Claim with UPS

You can file a claim by calling UPS Customer Service or submitting it online. Make sure you have your tracking number and package details ready to get started. If UPS delivered the package to the wrong address or was negligent during delivery, they may be liable. However, if the package was stolen after successful delivery to the correct address, UPS typically does not take responsibility.

Claims can take up to 8 business days for UPS to investigate and resolve.

Best Ways to Contact UPS for Quick Resolution

  • Recommended (Fastest): Call 1-800-742-5877, then press “5” to reach a human representative quickly. Available Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Service agents can help you resolve your issue faster than automated systems.
  • Online Claim: Submit a claim through the UPS website, but expect slower response times and less effective resolution. You’ll need your tracking number plus two other numbers from your receipt to submit the claim.
  • Email: Send a detailed email to [email protected] with your package details and value. Be assertive—state that the package contains important personal items and request that a UPS supervisor contacts you directly.

📦 Customer Story: A Real Experience Handling a Missed UPS Package

Here’s what one of our customers shared about their experience resolving a missed UPS package:

  1. File a Claim: This was the first step, and it was super easy to do online. They needed the tracking number and two additional codes from the receipt. Surprisingly, this channel didn’t even initiate an investigation—UPS immediately approved the claim and refunded $100 plus shipping by default. The customer had initially only intended to open an investigation but had written a claimed loss of $200 without any proof. By Tuesday, the refund was processed without any questions asked!
  2. Call Customer Service: They called 800-877-1760 and pressed “0” for a human representative—did this twice and got consistent answers. They learned that the actual sender is the store you used to drop off the package. UPS Store and UPS itself are separate systems (similar to a franchise model). The UPS Store just collects the package; the shipment itself is handled by the UPS warehouse. The package last appeared in Bayonne, NJ, so they called the local UPS Store, which confirmed that they are just a small location, not the actual handler. The agent suggested contacting the store where they dropped off the package to initiate an internal investigation since the store is considered the actual sender with its own system.
  3. Visit the UPS Store: They visited the store on Saturday to explain the situation. Initially, the clerk suggested filing a claim, but they insisted that the store start an investigation. The clerk said the manager would handle it on Monday. By Tuesday morning, the customer called the manager, who confirmed the investigation form had been filed and that tracking information would be updated by Thursday morning. Amazingly, even though the insurance had already paid out by Tuesday, the package was still found and updated by Thursday—showing the package was actually stuck in Kentucky and had never been shipped out initially!

This shows how different channels—claim filing, phone calls, and visiting the UPS Store—can each play a role in resolving a missed UPS delivery.
